It’s that time of year again where the beach is calling!
It’s the feel of the salty air in your face and the sound of the waves gently lapping at the shore. The kids are off of school, you’ve finally got some time off work, and you are due to be out for at least three whole days in the UK, so it feels only natural that we should consider a beach holiday! Most people love the beach, whether it’s a pebble beach or a sandy beach, there’s something so classically British about a summer holiday by the sea, and of course who could forget some fantastic beach games to play?
Beach Time is Play Time
While many adults will prefer to spend their time on the beach relaxing, laying on a beach towel, and soaking up the rays, we love the idea of getting active with the family. There are lots of games we can play, but we’ve gathered four of our favourite games that can be played on the beach, or even out and about in the park if you’re not blessed with a sandy shore within walking distance.
All these games can be played in small groups or larger groups and can be scaled up and down to suit your level of fitness and the ages of the players. They can all be played with minimal equipment too!
Rounders
The classic beach game, rounders! Most people have played rounders at school, and it makes for a great game between families. You’ll need a minimum of about 6 players (3 on each team), but you can always adapt the rules if you need to.
Bonus tip: a water bottle and a balled-up pair of socks make great bats and balls!
Treasure Hunt
Arr! Make like a pirate and search for the hidden treasure! Treasure hunts or scavenger hunts are great games for kids of all ages and can be really easy to set up on the beach or in the woods.
Bonus tip: print off and laminate scavenger hunts from the internet before your trip for quick to play options.
Capture the Flag
Capture the flag is an excellent game for older kids. Each team has its own flag in its own territory, and the aim of the game is to keep your flag and capture your opponents. Flags are usually hidden, and most players have a time limit.
Bonus tip: flags can be made out of anything from t-shirts to towels!
Frisbee Golf
Officially, frisbee golf involved hurling a frisbee towards 9 – 18 basket targets, depending on the course length, in the least number of throws, scored the same as golf. Unofficially this game can be so much fun for families with minimal equipment and minimal setup. You can use baskets or “goals” that have been set out a course with however many baskets you like!
Bonus tip: plastic plates can make good frisbees, but equally, a ball or rolled-up socks can do the job just as well for a quick game.
